The Law of Attraction for
Logical People

There is a lot of talk around about the ‘Law of Attraction’ and I know quite a few ‘logical people’ who think there is some kind of a gimmick involved or that no amount of thinking can really change anything. The truth is that there is quite a body of research that indicates thoughts have real power to change our physical reality.

Lynne McTaggart has examined a vast array of studies and met with a number of academics and researchers to assemble ‘The Intention Experiment’. In this book McTaggart looks at various kinds of thinking including intention, attention, prayer, energy healing and remote healing. She speaks with scientists from universities in Europe, the UK,  Russia, the Middle East and the US and finally begins conducting her own experiments with the design help of her eminent friends.

The short story is that there is robust research with statistically significant results that demonstrates our individual and collective thoughts can and do have an effect on the health and wellbeing of other physical beings and on events, weather, time, and technology. McTaggart’s book references over 400 scientific papers and other sources of research and is meticulously footnoted.

The implications of this information are huge. They offer hope for a seriously challenged world. They are only the beginning of course, but I would urge everyone with a thinking mind to consider reading this book and testing the propositions for themselves. Managing our thoughts is something we can all do and so the answers to so many contemporary problems, big and small, could be just a hair’s breadth away. Some interesting points from ‘The Intention Experiment’ follow and I urge you to take these ideas and consider them in a bigger context.

  • We can most influence others to become more ‘ordered’ when we are more ‘ordered’ ourselves.
  • When humans move/think we generate an electrical charge which is felt by other things around us and which therefore creates a relationship.
  • During healing an enormous surge of electrostatic energy occurs.
  • During activities requiring focused attention, including meditation, the energy will surge up to 3 volts (a still person emits 10-15 millivolts). Experienced healers produce up to 190 volts.
  • This energy comes from the healers abdomen – considered the central engine of internal energy of the body by martial arts.
  • Stanford University constructed a devise to measure energy produced by healers which was used in over 1,000 experiments – they concluded that directed thoughts produce demonstrable physical energy, even over remote distances.
  • An Associate Professor of Biology at University of Montréal looked at water treated by healers – he discovered that water treated by healers had undergone a fundamental change in the bonding of oxygen and hydrogen in it’s molecular makeup.
  • When someone holds a focused thought, he may be altering the very molecular structure of the object of his intention.
  • In addition to electrical energy, healers have been demonstrated to produce fluctuations in very low pulsations of a magnetic field. A huge increase in oscillations in the magnetic field occurred whenever a healer began to run energy. However, the most profound energy increase surged from their dominant hand. The master healers averaged close to a third more magnetic field charge per minute than a group of reiki healers.
  • In the mid-70’s a German physicist, Popp, stumbled across the fact that all living things emit a constant current of photons – tiny particles of light. For more than 30 years, Popp has maintained that this faint radiation, rather than biochemistry, is the true driving force behind orchestrating and coordinating all cellular processes in the body.
  • The intensity of this light is stable until the organism is somehow disturbed or ill, at which time the current goes sharply up or down.
  • We can now measure these photons using special photography and scientists have recorded images showing a clear stream of light flowing out of healer’s hands. These streams are actually the most organized light waves found in nature.
  • The photons from animals, plants and humans are highly coherent. When sub-atomic particles become coherent or ordered they become highly interlinked by bands of common electromagnetic fields and resonate like a multitude of tuning forks all tuned the same frequency. They stop behaving like anarchic individuals and begin operating  like one well-rehearsed marching band.
  • Directed intention appears to manifest itself as both electrical and magnetic energy and to produce an ordered stream of photons visible and measurable by sensitive equipment.
  • Mental practice has been shown to work just as well as physical practice for patterns and timing. The techniques involved in mental rehearsal have been exhaustively studied and written about in scientific literature and popular publications. Their credibility was given a further boost in 1990 when the National Academy of Sciences examined all the scientific studies to date on these techniques and declared mental rehearsal effective.
  • Thinking of changing an aspect of the body can work – one study demonstrated that under hypnosis women increased the dimension of their breasts simply by visualising themselves on the beach with the sun rays warming their chests.
  • Patients have boosted treatments of an array of severe and chronic conditions by using mental pictures.
  • Psychologist Jeanne Achtenberg, predicted with 93% accuracy the patients that would completely recover from cancer using visualisation based on their ability to powerfully visualise.
  • Biofeedback has become well established as a therapy for virtually every chronic condition from ADHD, menopausal hot flashes, stroke and spinal cord injuries. Astronauts have used it to counter motion sickness in space.
  • Surgeon Dr. Angel Escuderodo of Spain has carried out more than 900 complex surgeries without anesthesia with his patients using hypnotic intention to control the brains reaction.
  • Placebo is a form of intention and continues to plague drug companies because its effects are so marked. 46,000 heart patients recently participated in a drug trial – half were taking the placebo and they fared as well as those on the heart drug.
  • One in eight skin cancers spontaneously heal and one in five genitourinary cancers. All types of illness including those that cause irretrievable damage to vital organs have a record of spontaneous healing.

Now, if you're really ready for a mental challenge, read on!

In 1999, Israeli professor of internal medicine and expert in hospital-acquired infections conducted a study of healing prayer’s effect on nearly 4,000 adults who had developed sepsis while in hospital. The group that had been prayed for suffered fewer deaths than the control (28.1 vs. 30.2) but more significantly, the prayed-for group had far shorter duration of fever and hospital stay and, in general, got better faster than the control.

The subject of Leibovici’s research, the healing effects of prayer, was hardly new and the results in themselves not surprising. But his study offered one novel twist – the patients had been in the hospital between 1990 and 1996 and the praying was carried out in 2000 - between 4 and 10 years latter!

Other experiments and research of this nature – called time displaced intention or retro-causation – demonstrate clear instances of time-reversed effect where effect precedes cause.  In one case an experiment using intention to influence the outcome of a coin toss was repeated 87,000 times with markedly significant results.  Other similar experiments have included the behaviour of gerbils and people with the same conclusions – that intention can influence events in the past as well as those in the future.

I’ll leave you to ponder that!

McTaggart includes a chapter discussing what all the research means for you and me, that is, how best to power up your intention exercises. She summarises it as follows:

  • Make a special place that becomes your intention space – ideally a peaceful, healthy and natural place
  • First slow your brain by way of meditation or similar process (ie get into an alpha state)
  • Move into peak focus by being fully present and aware
  • Mentally and emotionally connect with the object of your intention using compassion, appreciation, empathy, a shared object or picture etc
  • State your intention and make it specific
  • Mentally rehearse the situation you are intending using all your senses
  • Visualise in every detail the intention as fact
  • Time it right – check what the sun is doing (see www.sec.noaa.gov and look for points of heightened geo-magnetic and solar activity) and choose days when you feel happy and well
  • Move aside – surrender to the power of the universe and let go of the outcome
